Summary: Holiday fic 5 of 35 written for [livejournal.com profile] ficwriter1966. Prompt given: Teen Mary/John - Mary and John's first Christmas together after she made the deal with the YED. Her first Christmas without her parents - no family left but John.

The apartment is small but nice. It’s all they can afford for the time being. At first it was until her parent’s house was sold - going back wasn’t an option for Mary and so John had started looking for a place they could call home for the time being. Then it was until they found a house of their own. Now it’s while their recently bought house goes through some needed repairs.

Right now, home is a small, basement apartment with an elderly couple renting the main floors of the house. Mark and John trade war stories while Doreen teaches Mary how to cook meals and bake desserts.

Yesterday, she went over every step of making the perfect Christmas dinner. Mark invited them both to come up for Christmas dinner but Mary declined. This is her first Christmas with John, her first Christmas being normal. She misses her parents, thinks of them every day, but she can finally be normal. Making Christmas dinner for the man she loves is part of that.

Mary goes over the list again and makes sure she hasn’t forgotten anything she needs for tomorrow’s dinner. She hasn’t. That done, she heads over to their tiny Christmas tree to add the little candy canes she bought while getting the groceries. John loves them, will probably finish them all by the time they take the tree down.

When John gets home late from work a few hours later, Mary’s eyes zero in on the shopping bag in his hand. She makes a grab for it but he moves his arm back with a chuckle.

“Down, girl,” he teases. “Not until tomorrow. Your father may have let you open gifts early but not me.” Mary pouts instead. It always worked with her father but John won’t have it. “Nice try. Am I going to have to hide this until morning?”

Mary puts her hands up in surrender. “I’ll be good,” she promises. “Go wash up and I’ll set the table for dinner.”

As he crosses the room and makes his way to their bedroom, Mary watches him and thinks back to the night when, for a short while, she had lost him, lost everything. She got him back though and she knows that whatever price will be collected in ten years will be more than worth John’s life and the life they’ll have together.

Wonderful story. I just wish poor Mary wasn't still thinking about the deal and how she got John back through evil. I wonder how long it takes before she forgets all that?

If ever?

Love, Robin

I'm sure she forgets with time. Until the night she dies, of course. Although the whole situation isn't something you just stop thinking about a few days later.

Early John/Mary fic is so much more painful since In the Beginning. Loved that they had happy times for the ten years they had, though. Great fic.

Yup! Happy times and then hello again Mr. YED.

Lovely, very lovely.

She got him back though and she knows that whatever price will be collected in ten years will be more than worth John’s life and the life they’ll have together.

And that line just breaks my heart.

I make it a point to try and break a few hearts when writing. It's a hobby.

Just kidding. I'm glad you liked it but sorry it broke your heart.
