Sam sits in his chair, staring at the sheet of paper that Miss Summers just handed to everyone and reads the sentence he has to fill out.

My favorite thing in the world is:

Underneath the fill-in sentence, they have to give five reasons explaining their choice.

Sam holds his new pen – the one he found on the ground this morning on his way to school – ready to fill in the blank and pauses. To his right, Tommy is writing about why he loves his new bike. He’s told everyone that it’s blue and goes real fast but that the best part of all is that it’s a two-wheeler because he’s not a baby anymore. He hasn’t stopped talking about it since yesterday.

To Sam’s left, Julia is writing about her teddy bear collection. She brought one for show-and-tell yesterday. It was pink with a black bow around its neck and black beady eyes that kept staring at Sam. He didn’t like it very much.

Behind him, Sam can hear Kyle telling Mark that his favorite thing is his new puppy. It peed in his shoe last night but Kyle doesn’t care because now his mom is going to get him a new pair, one that has red lights in the heel.

Sam doesn’t have a bike or a teddy bear collection – not that he wants one – and Dad won’t get him a puppy. He doesn't have blinking shoes, either. It doesn’t matter, though, because what Sam has is much better.

It really is.

Sam has the best big brother in the whole world. Smiling, Sam puts his pen to the paper and quickly starts to write.

My favorite thing in the world is: my big brother Dean.

Reason 1: He gives me all the lucky charms.
Reason 2: He keeps the monsters away.
Reason 3: He watches my cartoons with me.
Reason 4: He lets me stay up late.
Reason 5: He is the bestest coolest big brother in the WHOLE world.

Frowning, Sam looks at his completed paper. He’s filled all his lines but he hasn’t finished yet. Sam shrugs, pulls out his little plastic ruler and makes more lines. Miss Summers never said they had to stop at five.

Aww, that is so sweet. And I am sure there was a time my daughter would have written something similar. Of course now, at 14, I think she'd have other things to say about her big brother LOL.

I was actually planning a sequel set in the future where Dean finds out but it has wincest. Although thinking about it now, maybe I'll write a wincest version and non-wincest version for those who don't like wincest...
